Tākaka Primary School

Kia Kotahi Tātou, Tū Tonu Mai!

If you are interested in enroling at Tākaka Primary School we ask that you please contact our school office to arrange a meeting with our Principal Corinne Rowe to learn about what Tākaka Primary School can offer your child. This will include a tour of the school to see learning in action and to see the amazing facilities we as school offer to enhance the learning opportunities we provide for our tamariki.

Successful transitions from Early Learning Centres and Home Environments are fundamental to a positive start at school. We understand that parents and whānau are the experts and know their children better than anyone, and we want you to feel welcome and comfortable in our school as well. We recognise that transitions will be a different experience from child to child, and as such, we believe in a ‘flexible, needs-based approach’. However, our transitions are underpinned by the following protocols. This ensures that the school can plan for transitions accordingly - including staffing - and ensure that we meet everyone’s needs. The school also recognises that transitions create change for parents and whānau, who leave a consistent relationship with ECE and need to form new relationships within the school setting. Transitions continue to be a big focus for Tākaka Primary, as children move classes every 1-2 years; it is an ongoing process and one that we know takes time, effort and communication to ensure relationships can be formed and maintained. We have a dedicated Transitions Leader whose role is to support you to ensure a smooth transition for you and your child into our school whānau.

Throughout the year, Early Childhood Centres and Kindergartens are welcome to come and visit the new entrant classroom/s with a group of four-year-olds and interested whānau. To arrange this, our ECE centres make contact with the school principal, who liaises with the new entrant teachers to arrange a suitable time to visit.

Additional Needs/Concerns:

We have a skilled wrap-around team for learning and support at our school. If your child has any additional needs, or perhaps you just have concerns/information that you would like to share, we can organise a transition discussion, or a transition meeting. Transition discussions are more informal and involve parents and whānau, the teacher, and our Inclusion Coordinator. Transition meetings are more structured and may involve ECE key teachers, the school teacher, parents/whānau, our Inclusion Co-ordinator and any other agencies who are supporting your child. We can hold these meetings at a location that feels right for you.

If you are new to Tākaka Primary School, we encourage you to contact our school office on postie@takakaprimary.school.nz to make an appointment with Corinne Rowe our Principal, to learn more about what TPS has to offer and for a tour of our school.

Your child will have two school visits prior to starting school to support a smooth transition. Our visits happen during the week before your child starts school. We understand that starting school is a big life event for all whānau and want to ensure you feel supported as part of the process as well. With the first visit, we ask the parent to stay to support this transition and get to know the classroom teacher and your child’s class. Our two local Early Learning Centres; Golden Kids and Golden Bay Kindergarten, support the second visits by bringing a small group of children with their current teacher. Our Transitions Leader organises this visit with our local centres. This allows the children to come along with a familiar adult and their peers and we find this really supports the transition process. These visits are organised through our Junior School Transitions Leader - Emma Vile. During school visits, your child will participate in the daily class programme: they will play alongside their new classmates, participate in mat time, and spend some time getting to know their new teacher.

In order to attend visits, children need to be enrolled at Tākaka Primary School. To do this, simply ask for an enrolment form from the office, fill this in (we can help if you need), and return it to the office with a birth certificate and (if immunised) a copy of their immunisation record. Corina or Hayley will make copies of this and then give you information and dates for visits.

When you arrive for your visit, please sign in at the school office. You will then be taken over to the classroom to join your new whānau class.

At the end of your visit, we ask that you please sign out at the office.

What to bring for visits:

  • Bag

  • Lunchbox

  • Water bottle

  • Sunhat (if Term 1 or Term 4)

Please contact our school office to collect an enrolment form or you can print this from home.

Simply fill this in (we can help if you need), and return it to the office with a birth certificate and (if immunised) a copy of your child's immunisation record. Corina or Hayley will make copies of this for you and then give you further information and dates for up coming school visits.

We look forward to welcoming you to the TPS whānau!
